Hongjoong

Hongjoong, born Kim Hong-joong on November 7, 1998, in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, is the leader, main rapper, vocalist, and center of the K-pop group ATEEZ under KQ Entertainment. As the very first trainee to sign with KQ Entertainment, Hongjoong’s letter and self-produced demo tape to the label are credited as the spark that eventually led to ATEEZ’s formation, making him a foundational figure in the group’s history.

Hongjoong debuted with ATEEZ on October 24, 2018, through the mini album Treasure EP.1: All to Zero. Before debuting, he appeared on the survival show MIXNINE, an experience that helped shape his determination to succeed as an idol. Since debut, he has taken on a deeply hands-on role in ATEEZ’s music, composing and producing dozens of the group’s songs and helping shape the concepts and worldview behind their acclaimed album series, including Treasure, Zero: Fever, The World, and Golden Hour.

Known affectionately as the “dad” of ATEEZ for his strict yet caring leadership style, Hongjoong balances discipline with humor, and members often describe him as approachable despite his responsibilities as captain. He has also explored music direction outside the group, contributing to soundtrack work, including for the film Hallucination, which starred his older brother, contemporary dancer and actor Bumjoong.

Off stage, Hongjoong enjoys composing, customizing his own clothing, and speaking out on social causes through his art and lyrics. His leadership has been central to guiding ATEEZ from a rookie group to one of the most successful K-pop acts of its generation, achieving multiple Billboard 200 chart-topping albums and sold-out world tours.
