Who Is Ningning?

Ningning (닝닝), born Ning Yizhuo (宁艺卓) on October 23, 2002, is a Chinese singer and the main vocalist and maknae of the South Korean girl group aespa, formed by SM Entertainment. Known among fans by her English name Vivian Ning, she stands out as the only Chinese member of the quartet and one of the earliest SM trainees from mainland China, admired worldwide for her husky, powerful vocal tone and playful on-stage energy.

Early Life and Trainee Years

Ningning was born and raised in Harbin, Heilongjiang, a city in northeastern China near the Russian border. An only child, she grew up with a musical mother and an architect father, and she began singing at just five years old. Before moving to Korea, she took part in several Chinese talent programs, including China’s Got Talent and Let’s Sing Kids, honing the vocal skills that would later define her career. An SM Entertainment staff member noticed her singing talent online and reached out directly, leading her to fly to South Korea, sign her contract, and join the agency’s pre-debut team SM Rookies on September 19, 2016.

Debut With aespa

After several years of training, Ningning was revealed as the third member of aespa in late October 2020, alongside Karina, Winter, and Giselle. The group officially debuted on November 17, 2020, with the digital single “Black Mamba,” a track built around SM’s metaverse concept that introduced each member alongside her own virtual avatar. As aespa’s main vocalist, Ningning quickly became known for delivering some of the group’s most powerful high notes and memorable vocal runs.

Rise to Stardom and Solo Projects

Alongside aespa’s chart-topping releases such as Savage, Girls, My World, Drama, and their first full album Armageddon, Ningning has steadily built a body of individual work. In 2022 she released the duet OST “Once Again” with fellow member Winter for the drama Our Blues. In 2023 she surprised fans with “WYA,” a collaboration with American artist Jay Park, and in 2024 she contributed the OST “Count On Me” before unveiling her solo digital track “Bored!” during aespa’s second world tour. Beyond music, Ningning has also built a name for herself in fashion, serving as a brand ambassador for major international labels.

Fans and fellow members frequently describe Ningning as playful, honest, and the group’s resident “comedian,” responsible for many of aespa’s most beloved memes and candid moments. She is fluent in Mandarin, Korean, and English, a trilingual skill that has helped aespa connect with fans across different regions.
