I-DLE is a five-member South Korean girl group under Cube Entertainment that has become one of K-pop's most influential self-producing acts. Debuting on May 2, 2018 as (G)I-DLE with the breakout single "LATATA," the group built its identity around member Soyeon's songwriting and production, a rarity for a K-pop girl group at the time. Made up of Soyeon, Miyeon, Minnie, Yuqi, and Shuhua, I-DLE blends hip hop, pop, and electronic influences into concepts that swing from the dark theatrics of "HWAA" to the confident, rebellious energy of "TOMBOY," "Nxde," and the viral smash "Queencard."
Their Story
I-DLE (아이들), known for most of its career as (G)I-DLE, is a five-member South Korean girl group formed by Cube Entertainment. The group debuted on May 2, 2018 as a six-member act with the mini album I Am and its lead single “LATATA,” a song written by member Soyeon after she felt none of the label’s demo tracks fit the group’s identity.
From the start, I-DLE stood apart from most K-pop girl groups because its members were directly involved in writing, composing, and producing their own music. Soyeon became the group’s chief songwriter and producer, while Minnie and Yuqi also contributed as co-writers on numerous title tracks, giving I-DLE a level of creative control that was unusual for an idol act outside the industry’s largest agencies.
The group’s early run included the moody “HANN (Alone),” the 2019 hit “Uh-Oh,” and 2020’s record-breaking single album Dumdi Dumdi. In 2021, member Soojin departed following bullying allegations, and I-DLE continued as a five-member act. That lineup broke through in 2022 with the studio album I Never Die and its lead single “TOMBOY,” which became the group’s first number-one hit on Korean charts, followed by the globally viral “Nxde.”
I-DLE’s momentum only grew from there. “Queencard,” from the 2023 EP I Feel, turned into an international meme and streaming phenomenon, cementing the group’s reputation for bold, unapologetic concepts. The group has since released the second studio album 2, embarked on multiple world tours including I Never Die and Syncopation, and reunited on stage at Coachella-adjacent festivals and major award shows.
On May 2, 2025, marking their seventh anniversary, Cube Entertainment announced the group would officially rebrand from (G)I-DLE to I-dle, a name the members had used informally among fans for years. The rebrand arrived alongside the special EP We Are I-dle and the full EP We Are. Heading into 2026, the group released the digital single “Mono” featuring British artist Skaiwater and continued touring internationally, all while maintaining the self-produced, genre-blending sound that built their reputation.
Today, I-DLE is recognized as one of the standout acts of K-pop’s fourth generation, praised for its members’ songwriting credits, its willingness to experiment with darker and more mature concepts, and a fanbase, Neverland, that has followed the group from mid-sized venues to arenas and stadiums around the world.
