Hwasa

Hwasa is the stage name of Ahn Hye-jin, a South Korean singer-songwriter, rapper, dancer, and television personality best known as the lead vocalist, lead rapper, and maknae of the K-pop girl group Mamamoo. Since debuting in June 2014, Hwasa has grown from a scene-stealing member of one of K-pop’s most vocally gifted groups into one of the industry’s most influential and outspoken solo artists, celebrated for her husky, soulful tone and her genre-hopping mix of R&B, jazz, hip-hop, and pop.

Born on July 23, 1995, in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do, Hwasa grew up with her parents and two older sisters before graduating from Wonkwang Information Arts High School. She joined RBW as a trainee in 2011 alongside her close friend and future groupmate Wheein, and the two remain famously tight, right down to a set of matching friendship tattoos. Long before her official debut, Hwasa’s voice had already caught the ear of the industry — she recorded guide vocals for 4Minute and was featured on early tracks by artists like Solbi and the band Standing Egg.

Hwasa debuted with Mamamoo on June 19, 2014, as part of the group’s first EP, Hello, and quickly became known for her powerful low register and scene-stealing charisma. Within Mamamoo, she’s also written and produced music, starting with her very first solo cut, “My Heart / I Do Me.” Her real breakout as a soloist came with the 2019 digital single “Twit,” which scored a rare triple crown on Korea’s Gaon charts, followed by her acclaimed 2020 EP María, whose title track became a global streaming favorite and turned “the María challenge” into a viral moment. She’s also been part of the project supergroup Refund Sisters, formed on the variety show Hangout with Yoo.

In 2023, after nearly a decade with RBW, Hwasa left the label and signed with Psy’s agency, P Nation, kicking off a new solo era with singles like “I Love My Body,” “Chili,” and her 2024 EP O. She launched her first-ever solo world tour, “Twits” — also the name of her official fandom — and continued to dominate charts in 2025 with the hit single “Good Goodbye,” which achieved a Perfect All-Kill and became the most-streamed solo comeback of her career to date.

Beyond music, Hwasa is a fixture of Korean variety television, known for long-running appearances on shows like I Live Alone, and she’s become a highly sought-after fashion and beauty ambassador, walking for and fronting campaigns with brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Burberry, Valentino, Adidas, and The North Face. Off-stage, she’s earned a reputation as one of K-pop’s most candid voices on body image, self-confidence, and creative independence.
