Hyerim: The Multilingual Maknae Who Grew Up With Wonder Girls

Hyerim, born Woo Hye-rim on September 1, 1992, in Seoul, is a South Korean singer, rapper, songwriter, and radio host best known as the maknae of the pioneering girl group Wonder Girls. Fans who followed the K-pop idol scene in the late 2000s will remember that she wasn’t part of the group’s original 2007 lineup. Instead, she joined in January 2010, stepping in when member Sunmi paused her career to focus on school. Before Wonder Girls, Hyerim spent 14 years growing up in Hong Kong, which is exactly why she speaks Korean, English, Cantonese, and Mandarin so fluently today. She was actually training for years as part of a three-member Chinese pre-debut unit alongside Jia and Fei, the two trainees who eventually became founding members of miss A. When that project didn’t pan out for her, JYP redirected her talent toward Wonder Girls instead, and she made her official debut on stage in Shanghai on February 5, 2010.

As a lead rapper and vocalist, Hyerim contributed far more than just her voice. She’s a genuine singer-songwriter, having helped write and produce tracks on the group’s 2015 album “Reboot,” and she co-wrote the group’s chart-topping 2016 comeback single “Why So Lonely” alongside fellow members Sunmi and Yubin. When Wonder Girls officially disbanded in 2017, Hyerim didn’t step away from public life. She went back to school, earning a degree in interpretation and translation from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, even translating Anne Frank’s “The Diary of a Young Girl” into Korean along the way. She later signed with RRR Entertainment, the label founded by former groupmate Yubin, before joining Wave Entertainment in 2024. That same year, she began hosting “Wonder Hours with Hyerim” on KBS World Radio, keeping her connection to music alive from behind the mic.

Outside her music career, Hyerim married taekwondo athlete Shin Min-chul in July 2020 after seven years of dating, and the couple has since welcomed two sons.
