Biography & History

1VERSE started as an idea inside the mind of Michelle Cho, a Korean-American music executive who spent years at SM Entertainment nurturing some of K-pop’s biggest names. When she founded Singing Beetle Entertainment in 2019, her goal wasn’t just to create another idol group – it was to build something real, with artists who had something genuine to say.

The first person she found was Yu Hyuk, a young man from North Hamgyong Province, North Korea, who had crossed through three countries to reach South Korea. Growing up in poverty – eating just one meal a day, doing odd jobs, and sometimes stealing food to survive – Hyuk discovered rap through South Korean television and never looked back. Michelle Cho spotted his talent after hearing rap lyrics he’d written for a school talent show, and by 2021 he was training full-time under the Singing Beetle label, becoming the very first member of what would eventually become 1VERSE (then called SB Boyz).

About a year and a half later, Kim Seok joined the group – another North Korean defector, born in Ryanggang Province, who had secretly listened to smuggled K-pop songs back home and dreamed of one day creating music that could move people. A former professional soccer player, Seok brought a quiet intensity to the team that balanced Hyuk’s energy perfectly.

In 2023, two more members were brought in from very different parts of the world. Kenny (Hao Ruiran), a Chinese-American singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, California, had dropped out of college and moved to South Korea to chase his dream of becoming a K-pop idol – after first appearing as a contestant on the Hong Kong survival show Asia Super Young. And from Chiba, Japan, came Aito (Murata Aito), a trained dancer and former SM Entertainment trainee who had nearly given up on the idol dream entirely before Kenny and Michelle Cho convinced him to give it one more shot.

The final piece of the puzzle arrived at the end of 2024: Nathan Kousol, a Lao-Thai American from Bentonville, Arkansas, who had been sending audition videos to K-pop companies for seven straight years. It was actually Kenny who discovered Nathan’s YouTube channel and sent it to Singing Beetle. Things moved fast after that, and Nathan was officially announced as the fifth and youngest member on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024.

Before officially debuting, the group released a pre-debut single, “Multiverse”, on July 4, 2025 – co-produced by Hyuk himself. Then, on July 18, 2025, 1VERSE officially launched with their debut single album, “The 1st Verse”, and the title track “Shattered”. The debut made headlines around the world, not just in the K-pop community, as major outlets like the Wall Street Journal covered the extraordinary backstories of Hyuk and Seok.

In September 2025, Hyuk announced a temporary hiatus for personal and health reasons. The remaining four members continued promoting, and in January 2026, 1VERSE released their second release – the digital single “WABIF (Wide Awake Before I Fall)”, co-written by Kenny and Nathan. The same month, they kicked off their first-ever tour, the “Shattered” Tour, across North America. In May 2026, Seok also went on a health hiatus with plans to return when ready.

Trivia & Fun Facts

Interesting details and fun facts about 1VERSE.

1VERSE is pronounced "Universe" - the "1" replaces the "Uni" prefix, meaning they are a world unto themselves.
Hyuk and Seok are the first North Korean defectors to debut as K-pop idols - a historic milestone for the industry.
The group was originally called SB Boyz before rebranding to 1VERSE.
Michelle Cho, the founder of Singing Beetle, previously worked at SM Entertainment as an A&R executive and collaborated with EXO, SHINee, Baekhyun, Kai, SEVENTEEN, and shows like Queendom Puzzle and Produce 101.
Hyuk co-produced the group's pre-debut single "Multiverse" himself.
Hyuk also earned a royalty check from writing for TWICE's subunit MISAMO - and used it to treat all the members and company staff to an expensive BBQ.
Seok was a professional soccer player - and his position was striker - both in North and South Korea.
While still in North Korea, Seok secretly listened to smuggled K-pop music and watched music videos - and fell in love with the diversity of the lyrics.
Hyuk traveled through three countries to defect from North Korea.
Kenny discovered Nathan on YouTube and sent the link to Singing Beetle - making him indirectly responsible for Nathan joining the group.
Nathan auditioned for K-pop groups for seven straight years before finally making it.
Aito taught dance in Japan before becoming an idol trainee.
Both Kenny and Aito are former SM Entertainment trainees.
Kenny was a contestant on the Hong Kong survival show Asia Super Young but had to leave due to a broken foot.
Nathan is 75% Laotian and 25% Thai - and grew up in Bentonville, Arkansas.
The group's members took special classes in shadow interviewing, English, and global citizenship as part of their training.
Hyuk and Aito are dorm roommates, while Kenny and Seok share a room.
"WABIF (Wide Awake Before I Fall)" was co-written by Kenny and Nathan - making it one of the first member-written releases for the group.
Nathan has over 400K TikTok followers and had been releasing original music since 2020 - before joining 1VERSE.
Hyuk was almost an actor before meeting Michelle Cho - he had appeared on TV multiple times and thought acting might be the path that would let his family in North Korea see him thriving.
Seok used to listen to "LA chA TA" by f(x) as one of his favorite K-pop tracks when he first discovered the genre.
Kenny has a cat allergy, which is unfortunate since Aito's favorite animal is a cat - and Aito has a pet cat named Chimi.
Hyuk once said he hates the smell of bread but will eat it if there's nothing else available - meanwhile Seok hates potatoes because he grew up in Daehongdan, North Korea, a region so famous for potatoes that residents eat them for all three meals.
Nathan was introduced as a member on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024 - after a teaser video on December 23 showed a mystery member singing Justin Bieber's "Mistletoe."
Kenny runs a series called "Kenny's Cooking Show" on the group's official YouTube channel - even though the members joke that he "hardly cooks" despite his claims.
Hyuk's role models are Jimin and Suga from BTS, while Aito's dance inspirations are Jimin (BTS) and Yeonjun (TXT) - Jimin is a shared inspiration across multiple members.
The group's official fandom name 5TARZ was revealed on June 17, 2025, just weeks before their debut.
"Shattered" Tour in January–February 2026 was the group's first-ever world tour, kicking off across North America.
Hyuk once lived in the USA for a year, giving him a head start on the English-language connections the group leans into heavily.
The group's concept of being "global outsiders" is intentional - every single member, whether from North Korea, Japan, or the United States, has had to navigate being an outsider in Korean society.
