DAY6 (Even of Day), widely known simply as Even of Day, is the debut sub-unit of the South Korean rock band DAY6 under JYP Entertainment. Formed in August 2020 around the trio of Young K, Wonpil, and Dowoon, the unit was born out of necessity when bandmates Sungjin and Jae stepped away from promotions to focus on their mental health.

Biography & History

DAY6 (Even of Day), often shortened to Even of Day, is the first official sub-unit of the South Korean band DAY6, formed under JYP Entertainment. The trio brings together bassist Young K, keyboardist Wonpil, and drummer Dowoon — the three members who stayed active in 2020 while band leader Sungjin and guitarist Jae stepped back to focus on their mental health. Rather than pause music entirely, JYP Entertainment and the members turned that difficult chapter into something new.

How Even of Day Came To Be

In August 2020, rumors began swirling that DAY6 was preparing a surprise project. JYP Entertainment soon confirmed it: a three-member unit built around Young K, Wonpil, and Dowoon. The unit’s name was chosen personally by JYP founder Park Jin-young, who combined an old Korean expression for “night” with the word “day” — a poetic way of saying that a bright day always follows a dark night. It’s a fitting message for a project born out of a hiatus.

Debut and Discography

Even of Day debuted on August 31, 2020, with the EP “The Book of Us: Gluon” and its lead single “Where the Sea Sleeps.” The release marked the fourth and final chapter in DAY6’s long-running “The Book of Us” concept series, and it entered the Gaon Album Chart at number three. The EP’s fully animated music video introduced the members’ plush mascots — Denimalz — and quietly reassured fans that Sungjin and Jae were never far from the group’s heart.

The unit returned in July 2021 with a second EP, “Right Through Me,” once again peaking at number three domestically. In between and afterward, Even of Day kept connecting with fans through smaller releases: the digital single “So, This Is Love” (2021), a surprise video-only track called “Darling on the Beach” (2022) released while all three members were serving in the military, and the 2025 OST contribution “Maplelatte” for the drama Dear.M.

A Different Side of DAY6

Where DAY6’s main discography leans into guitar-driven pop-rock, Even of Day explores softer, synth-and-piano-based balladry — a natural fit given the unit’s line-up of bass, keys, and drums rather than a full band arrangement. Young K and Wonpil write and co-compose much of the material themselves, continuing DAY6’s reputation as a genuinely self-producing act.

Even of Day shares its fandom, My Day, with the main group, and the unit has never needed a separate identity from DAY6 — it exists as an extension of the same music family, proof that even during a hiatus, the members found a way to keep the light on for their fans.

“Even after the darkest night, a new day always comes - the idea Park Jin-young built the unit's name and message around.”

Trivia & Fun Facts

Interesting details and fun facts about DAY6 (Even of Day).

Even of Day is DAY6's first official sub-unit, formed in August 2020 during Sungjin and Jae's hiatus from group activities.
The name "Even of Day" was coined by JYP Entertainment founder Park Jin-young, blending an old word for "evening" with "day."
The unit is made up of DAY6's three youngest and most consistently active members: Young K, Wonpil, and Dowoon.
Their debut EP The Book of Us: Gluon was the fourth and final installment in DAY6's long-running "The Book of Us" album series.
News of the sub-unit spread quickly after fans noticed the trio nicknamed "KangWonDo," a playful mash-up of the members' names.
Each member has an animated mascot called a "Denimalz": Young K is the fox Ke, Wonpil is the rabbit Pil, and Dowoon is the dog Don.
The music video for "Where the Sea Sleeps" is entirely animated, following the Denimalz characters on a space-and-ocean adventure.
The Book of Us: Gluon includes an intro track ("Landing"), two interludes ("Ocean" and "Forest"), and an outro ("To Be Continued").
The Book of Us: Gluon debuted at number three on the Gaon (now Circle) Album Chart in 2020.
Young K and Wonpil personally co-wrote and co-composed the majority of the unit's discography.
Even of Day released the digital single "So, This Is Love" in January 2021 as part of the web music show Secret Atelier.
Their first live event was the online concert "Online Party Night: The Arcane Salon," held in January 2021.
The unit's second EP, Right Through Me, arrived in July 2021 and was produced with longtime collaborator Hong Ji-sang.
Nearly all lyrics on Right Through Me were written by Young K, aside from one track penned by Wonpil.
Right Through Me also debuted at number three on Korea's album chart, matching the unit's first release.
Even of Day held a second online concert, "Right Through Me," broadcast via the platform Beyond Live in August 2021.
In August 2022, the unit surprised fans with the video-only single "Darling on the Beach," released while all three members were serving in the military.
"Darling on the Beach" exists only as a music video, with no accompanying official audio single release.
In 2025, Even of Day contributed the track "Maplelatte" to the OST of the Korean drama Dear.M.
"Maplelatte" was produced by the hit-making team GALACTIKA and features backing vocals from all three members.
Despite being a small sub-unit, all three members remain credited songwriters, reflecting DAY6's identity as a self-producing band.
Dowoon serves as the informal "leader" of Even of Day, distinct from his maknae role in the main group.
Even of Day shares its fandom name, My Day, entirely with the parent group DAY6.
There is no separate lightstick for the unit; fans use DAY6's official Light Band at Even of Day events.
Even of Day's sound leans further into synth-pop and piano balladry compared to DAY6's guitar-driven rock style.
The trio recorded their debut music while bandmates Sungjin and Jae were on hiatus for mental health reasons, a fact later confirmed publicly.
Fans often describe Even of Day's music as more mellow and R&B-tinged compared to the main band's energetic pop-rock catalog.
Young K has said the lyrics to "Right Through Me" reflect perseverance through hardship, echoing the band's real hiatus experience.
The web series "Summer Melody" (2021) followed the three members enjoying a relaxing staycation together.
Even of Day kept releasing content even as all three members entered mandatory military service between 2021 and 2022.
"Maplelatte" re-entered Korean digital charts years after the unit's original run, showing fans' lasting support.
Wonpil, known for collecting action figures as a hobby, has contributed lyrics and ideas across the unit's releases.
Young K spent part of his adolescence in Toronto, Canada, an experience he has said shaped his songwriting perspective.
Because DAY6 is a real, self-playing band, Even of Day's live stages typically feature the trio actually playing bass, keys, and drums rather than using a backing band.

Everything that makes DAY6 (Even of Day)'s fandom unique — from their name to their official light stick.

Fandom Name
My Day

My Day is the official fandom name shared by DAY6 and Even of Day. It reflects the idea that the band and their fans fill up each other's days — the group represents six days of the week, while fans represent the seventh, completing the week together. Even of Day, as a sub-unit rather than a separate group, draws directly on this same fandom identity rather than maintaining its own.

Light Stick
No official unit lightstick (shares DAY6's Light Band)

Even of Day does not have a dedicated lightstick. Instead, fans bring DAY6's official Light Band — a wristband-style fanlight (rather than a traditional stick) equipped with a rechargeable battery and multiple lighting modes — to Even of Day's concerts and fan events, since the sub-unit shares its fandom and merchandise with the main band.
