DIA (다이아) is a South Korean girl group formed by MBK Entertainment, built around the idea of "Do It Amazing" - the backronym behind its name, which is also short for DIAMOND. Debuting on September 14, 2015 with the lead single "Somehow" from the album Do It Amazing, DIA quickly earned the nickname "T-ara's little sister group" thanks to sharing an agency with the veteran K-pop act.
Their Story
DIA (다이아), short for DIAMOND and popularly read as the backronym “Do It Amazing,” is a South Korean girl group formed by MBK Entertainment. If you grew up watching mid-2010s K-pop girl groups rise and reshuffle, DIA’s story will feel familiar — and that’s exactly what makes it worth telling. The group debuted on September 14, 2015 with the lead single “Somehow” from its first studio album, Do It Amazing, and because label-mates T-ara shared the same agency, fans quickly nicknamed DIA “T-ara’s little sister group.”
Here’s something a lot of casual fans don’t know: DIA almost debuted through a reality survival show. MBK Entertainment first announced a competition format, but the company scrapped it midway and chose the members internally instead. That decision gave us the original seven-member lineup — Seunghee, Eunice, Huihyeon (then “Cathy”), Jenny, Yebin, Eunjin, and Chaeyeon.
If there’s one word that defines DIA’s journey, it’s change. You’ll notice the group cycled through nine different members across its run. Seunghee left in 2016 when her contract expired, Eunchae joined that same year, and Jueun and Somyi arrived in 2017 to round out a nine-member era. Eunjin departed in 2018 for health reasons, Jenny followed in 2019 with a knee injury, and Somyi exited in 2022. By the time DIA released its final single, “Rooting for You,” on its seventh debut anniversary, the group had settled into the lineup fans remember best: Eunice, Huihyeon, Yebin, Chaeyeon, Eunchae, and Jueun.
| Era | What Happened |
|---|---|
| 2016 — Spell | DIA released a Harry Potter-themed EP and split into two rotating subunits, BinChaenHyunSeuS (“BCHCS”) and L.U.B. |
| 2017 — YOLO | Their second studio album leaned into member-written tracks, with several girls credited as songwriters and composers. |
| 2018 — Summer Ade | “WooWoo” finally brought DIA its first-ever music show win, three years after debut. |
| 2022 — Rooting for You | DIA released a farewell single as its members’ contracts with the agency expired. |
DIA isn’t officially disbanded — members have said the group chat is still active and that they’d be open to reuniting — but the act has been on an indefinite hiatus since September 2022, with each member now pursuing music, acting, or broadcasting under separate agencies. Whether or not DIA ever makes a full comeback, its catalog remains a genuinely fun snapshot of a girl group that leaned into dance-pop energy, self-written lyrics, and a whole lot of member turnover along the way.
