A-Jax (에이젝스) was a South Korean boy band formed by DSP Media in 2012, known for debuting simultaneously in Korea and Japan and for taking its name from the Greek mythological hero Ajax the Great. Originally a seven-member rookie group, A-Jax built its early identity around a rock-influenced pop sound with singles like "One 4 U" and "Hot Game," the latter featuring KARA's Nicole.
Their Story
A-Jax (에이젝스), stylized in all caps as A-JAX, is a South Korean boy band formed by DSP Media that first stepped into the spotlight in 2012. If you’re digging into K-pop history and want to know who these guys were, stick with me, because their story is a fun one: it’s got a Greek mythology-inspired name, a simultaneous Korea-Japan debut, and a mid-career reshuffle that turned a seven-member rookie group into a lean five-member unit.
Before they were A-Jax, the members trained together under the working name “DSP Boyz.” DSP Media revealed the members one by one in April 2012 through teaser videos, building buzz the same way the label had done for earlier acts. On April 24, 2012, the agency confirmed the group’s official name: A-Jax, a nod to Ajax the Great, the mythological Greek hero who helped secure victory during the Trojan War. It’s a name that signaled the group’s intended image — strong, heroic, and ready to make an impact on the K-pop scene.
A-Jax made history among rookie boy groups by debuting in South Korea and Japan at nearly the same time, following the path laid out earlier by SS501. Ahead of their official bow, the group released the prologue track “Never Let Go” on May 15, 2012, featuring KARA’s Goo Hara in the music video. Then came the real debut: “One 4 U,” released June 1, 2012, in Korea and August 8, 2012, in Japan through Universal Sigma. The Korean music video reportedly cost around $42,500 USD in CG effects alone — a serious investment for a rookie act. A-Jax also opened for KARA’s Karasia tour dates in Saitama, Japan, just before their debut, giving them valuable stage experience in front of a large crowd.
A-Jax originally had seven members, but 2016 brought a major shake-up. In January 2016, main vocalist Sungmin left the group to pursue a solo career (later performing as RYL). The following month, DSP Media announced that Jaehyung and Jihu were also departing — Jaehyung’s contract was terminated, while Jihu remained with the agency in other ventures. To keep the group active, DSP added a new member, Joonghee, and A-Jax continued on as a five-member act: Dowoo, Yunyoung, Seungjin, Seungyub, and Joonghee. This final lineup leaned more heavily into Japanese promotions, releasing the singles “Romeo” (2017) and “You” (2018).
A-Jax never scored a music show win during their time together, and by the late 2010s, the group’s activity had slowed considerably. On March 31, 2019, DSP Media confirmed that the members’ contracts had expired and would not be renewed, officially ending A-Jax’s seven-year run. It was a low-key ending for a group that had once been positioned as a flagship rookie act, but their fandom, A-Light, remembers them fondly as one of the more underrated boy groups of the early 2010s Hallyu wave.
