Asa (아사)
Biography
Asa, whose birth name is Enami Asa (榎並杏紗), was born on April 17, 2006, in Tokyo, Japan. She grew up with her parents and two older sisters, Lisa Enami (born 2000) and Chisa Enami (born 2003). Before her idol career began, Asa had already built a foundation in the performing arts — she trained in musical theater and took part in the LADYBIRD Green Musical back in 2017.
Asa’s connection to YG Entertainment started early. Her mother is a fan of Block B’s music, and Asa performed their song “Very Very Good” at a dance school when she was just seven years old. That early stage experience planted the seed for her idol dream. She wanted to join YG Entertainment after she came across a BLACKPINK music video and fell in love with the label’s distinctive hip-hop style. She auditioned for YG around 2018, at the age of 12, performing “Weekend Warrior” by 80kidz — and passed.
What followed was a grueling, multi-year trainee journey. Asa trained for roughly five years before she ever stepped on a debut stage, enduring homesickness, language barriers, and constant evaluation while still a young teenager living far from home. General producer Yang Hyun Suk once praised her generation of trainees, saying that coming to a foreign country at age 12 or 13, unable to even communicate, and enduring training anyway, showed they had a clear aim and dream.
Asa’s name was first teased publicly when YG began rolling out BABYMONSTER’s pre-debut content in early 2023. She was officially introduced as the fourth member on January 26, 2023, and ranked seventh in the group’s final debut line-up announcement. Her introduction video, “BABYMONSTER – Introducing ASA,” dropped shortly after, showing off her hip-hop sensibility and her drive to “become a K-pop artist.”
The road to debut wasn’t without bumps. In May 2023, a leaked practice clip showed Asa struggling with pitch control during an internal vocal evaluation, sparking some online criticism. YG responded by releasing a series of vocal training videos featuring her through that summer. As one of only two Japanese members in a predominantly Korean industry, she also faced early skepticism about cultural adaptation — concerns that faded after she delivered a full Korean rap verse during BABYMONSTER’s KCON Japan 2024 stage.
BABYMONSTER’s first six members debuted with the digital single “Batter Up” on November 27, 2023 (Asa included), though the group’s official full seven-member debut came on April 1, 2024 with the EP BABYMONS7ER and its title track “SHEESH.” Asa performed the song’s high-speed opening rap, a verse arranged at roughly 150 BPM that demanded extremely tight rhythmic control — a moment widely seen as her breakout showcase.
Since debut, Asa has continued to expand her creative footprint within the group. She co-wrote and contributed to the group’s debut single “Batter Up,” and in November 2024 she co-wrote and released the duet track “Woke Up In Tokyo” with fellow Japanese member Ruka for BABYMONSTER’s first studio album, DRIP. During the group’s Tokyo stop of “BABYMONSTER THE FIRST STAGE” concert in June 2024, she rearranged the rap sections of BLACKPINK’s “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” into a Japanese version, which was warmly received by local fans.
Off stage, Asa is known among fans for her playful, perfectionist personality, her love of cooking and dancing, and her closeness with groupmate Ruka. She continues to grow as a rapper, dancer, and now songwriter, balancing her identity as a Japanese artist with her deepening fluency in Korean — a skill so strong that she jokingly calls herself a “native speaker.”
