Minhyun, born Hwang Min-hyun on August 9, 1995, in Busan, South Korea, is a South Korean singer-songwriter, dancer, and actor under Pledis Entertainment. Fans across the globe first fell for him as the lead vocalist and visual of the beloved boy group NU’EST, and today he’s carving out his own lane as a solo artist and leading man on the small screen. Early Life and Trainee Days

Minhyun grew up in Busan with his grandmother, parents, and older sister, and he still credits that close-knit family for his grounded personality. He was scouted by Pledis Entertainment as a young teen and trained for nearly two years before debut. Before he ever performed as an idol, he turned heads in Orange Caramel‘s “Shanghai Romance” music video, which is exactly where he picked up his enduring nickname, “Shanghai Boy.”

Debut With NU’EST and the Produce 101 Breakthrough

On March 15, 2012, Minhyun officially debuted with NU’EST alongside JR, Aron, Baekho, and Ren. The group built a loyal fanbase with releases like “Face,” “Action,” and “Overcome,” but true mainstream recognition came in 2017 when Minhyun competed on Produce 101 Season 2. Viewers loved his sharp visuals and reliable vocals, and he finished 9th overall, earning him a spot in the hit project group Wanna One. He promoted with Wanna One for about a year and a half before returning to NU’EST in early 2019.

Back to NU’EST and Solo Ventures

Reunited with his original members, Minhyun helped power NU’EST’s celebrated comeback era with EPs like Happily Ever After and The Table, while also releasing his first pre-release solo single, “Universe,” in April 2019. He expanded into musical theatre that same year, debuting as Count Axel von Fersen in the Seoul revival of Marie Antoinette. When NU’EST’s contract with Pledis expired in March 2022, Minhyun was one of two members who chose to stay with the agency, marking the group’s disbandment after a decade together.

Acting Career and Solo Debut

Minhyun has steadily built an acting résumé to match his music career, landing lead roles in the dramas Live On (2020–2021), Alchemy of Souls (2022–2023), and My Lovely Liar (2023). On February 27, 2023, he finally made his long-awaited solo debut with the mini-album Truth or Lie, led by the single “Hidden Side.” He has since balanced acting and music, holding solo fan concerts across Asia and continuing to write and compose his own material.

Personal Life

Known among fans and fellow idols as the caring “mom” of NU’EST, Minhyun keeps his dorm and his life tidy, loves cleaning and organizing, and is famously allergic to fur, dust, and several foods. He studied theater and film at Inha University before continuing his education in K-pop studies at Hanyang University, and his fanclub, officially named “Hwangdo,” was unveiled in July 2022.
