Biography
Who Is San From ATEEZ?
San, born Choi San on July 10, 1999, is a South Korean dancer and vocalist who serves as ATEEZ’s main dancer and lead vocalist. Under KQ Entertainment, San has become known both for his powerful, flexible dance lines and his warm, mood-making personality that fans and members alike describe as the heart of the group’s off-stage energy.
Early Life
San was raised in Namhae-gun, a coastal county in South Gyeongsang Province, though he was technically born in nearby Jinju because Namhae itself lacked a hospital at the time. He studied at a Korean arts high school with a focus on music and later continued studies related to broadcasting and entertainment. Before debuting, San trained under KQ Entertainment and appeared in the pre-debut web series that introduced the group, then known as KQ Fellaz, training in Los Angeles at the Millennium Dance Complex. He auditioned for MIXNINE but did not pass, a common thread among several future ATEEZ members.
Debut And Growth With ATEEZ
San debuted with ATEEZ on October 24, 2018, and has since grown from a lead dancer into one of the group’s official main dancers, a position that became formal in 2024 after members recognized his growth. He is also credited as a lead or main vocalist across different ATEEZ eras, showcasing a rare combination of dance and vocal strength that has made him a standout performer in the group’s high-energy stage shows.
Acting And Individual Work
In 2021, San made his acting debut in the Korean drama Imitation alongside fellow ATEEZ members Seonghwa, Yunho and Jongho, playing Minsu, a member of the fictional idol group Sparkling. He has also released the collaborative and individual-leaning single “Wave” as part of ATEEZ’s expanding creative output and has appeared as a guest on variety programs such as Running Man.
Personality And Public Image
Known as the “mood maker” of ATEEZ, San brings comic timing and warmth to the group’s variety appearances and content. He shares a close friendship with member Wooyoung, nicknamed “WooSan,” and the pair even have matching tattoos reading “Amicus ad Aras,” meaning “friends until the end.” San is also known for his love of plush toys, especially a companion named Shiber, which he has carried since his training days in the U.S.
Global Recognition
As ATEEZ’s popularity has grown internationally, San has been consistently ranked among the group’s most popular and visually striking members, contributing to milestones such as the group’s first Billboard 200 No.1 albums, its historic Coachella performance, and sold-out world tours. He has also used his platform for hometown initiatives, including a charitable donation to Namhae-gun residents and his appointment as a public-relations ambassador for his hometown.
What’s Next For San
Heading into ATEEZ’s continued Golden Hour era, San remains central to the group’s performance identity, balancing his main dancer and lead vocalist duties with acting opportunities and fan-facing content that keeps ATINY closely connected to his journey.
