SeolA
Biography
SeolA, born Kim Hyun-jung, is the oldest member and one of the lead vocalists of the South Korean girl group WJSN (also known as Cosmic Girls), and a member of its vocal-focused sub-unit WJSN The Black. Known for her warm, honey-toned voice, SeolA has grown from a shy trainee into one of the most trusted vocal anchors in the K-pop idol scene, and in January 2024 she stepped out on her own as a soloist with the single album Inside Out.
Early Life and Trainee Years
SeolA was born on December 24, 1994, in Seoul, South Korea. She started training for her idol career around 2006, spending roughly ten years as a trainee before her official debut — a journey that included a stint with the pre-debut project VIVA Girls alongside future Cosmic Girls member Exy. Along the way, she used a couple of different stage names, including Junmi and SeolHa, before settling on SeolA.
Debut with WJSN
On December 24, 2015, Starship Entertainment revealed SeolA as part of WJSN’s Sweet Unit, alongside Exy and Soobin. The full 12-member lineup of WJSN (Cosmic Girls) debuted on February 25, 2016, with the mini-album Would You Like? and its title tracks “Mo Mo Mo” and “Catch Me.” As the group’s lead vocalist, SeolA quickly became known for carrying emotional high notes and delicate ad-libs in the group’s discography.
Broadcast, Units, and Acting Career
Beyond music, SeolA has built a steady side career in Korean drama and radio. In 2016, she took part in King of Mask Singer, and in 2017 she made her acting debut in the web series Good Morning Double-Decker Bus. She went on to star in In-Out Sider (2019), the Netflix horror anthology Goedam (2020), and the romantic web drama Love in Black Hole (2021). In 2018, she teamed up with fellow member Luda and Weki Meki’s Yoojung and Doyeon for the collaboration unit WJMK, releasing the single “Strong.” She recorded the OST duet “Love Virus” with Monsta X’s Kihyun the same year. In 2021, she debuted with WJSN’s vocal sub-unit WJSN The Black alongside Exy, Bona, and Eunseo, and from 2023 she has hosted her own slot as a DJ on KBS Radio’s Station Z.
Solo Debut and Recent Activities
After eight years promoting as part of WJSN, SeolA finally stepped into the spotlight on her own on January 23, 2024, releasing the single album Inside Out — becoming the first Korean member of WJSN to debut solo. The lead single “Without U” showed off a more mature, girl-crush side of her artistry. In June 2025, she held her first solo fan meeting, “SeolA’s Moments: with U,” in Seoul.
Personality and Style
Fans and members alike describe SeolA as the group’s “vitamin” — someone whose calm, sweet presence lifts the mood backstage. Her INFP personality shows in her love of quiet hobbies like reading, journaling, and long naps, balanced by a surprisingly playful sense of humor once she’s comfortable. As WJSN’s unnie (older sister figure), she’s often the one keeping the group grounded through comebacks, tours, and their 2022 Queendom 2 win.
