Shinyu

Shinyu is the leader and main rapper of TWS (투어스), the six-member South Korean boy group under Pledis Entertainment known for pioneering the “boyhood pop” genre. Born Shin Jung-hwan on November 7, 2003, in Yesan, Chungcheongnam-do, Shinyu is the oldest member of the group and the only one who performs under a stage name rather than his given name — a nod to the childhood nickname his family always called him.

Before joining Pledis Entertainment, Shinyu spent time training at SM Entertainment and later Big Hit Music, building roughly five to six years of trainee experience by the time TWS debuted. That varied background shows up in the confidence he brings to the stage today, whether he’s leading a group interview or delivering a rap verse in songs like Plot Twist and If I’m S, Can You Be My N.

Early Life and Path to Debut

Shinyu grew up in Yesan as the youngest child, with two older sisters. He attended Silryewon Elementary School and Yesan Middle School before enrolling at Yesan High School, which he later left to pursue Lila Art High School’s Department of Video and Music Content, where he majored in theater and acting. Long before he ever considered idol training, his first dream was actually to become a model — a detail that still shows in his striking visuals and stage presence.

Debut with TWS and Role as Leader

Shinyu officially debuted on January 22, 2024, alongside Dohoon, Youngjae, Hanjin, Jihoon, and Kyungmin, when TWS released its first mini album, Sparkling Blue. As leader, he’s often described by the other members as strict but warm, someone who checks in on everyone and isn’t shy about expressing affection for his teammates. Fans and TWS’s own content team point to him as the one member quietly “detecting” changes in his groupmates’ moods, a role that fits his caring, homebody personality.

Personality and Everyday Life

Off stage, Shinyu describes himself as a homebody who enjoys exercising, bowling, and drawing in his downtime. He shares his TWS dorm room with Youngjae, keeps a pet Poodle named Strawberry, and has openly said he isn’t a fan of ghost stories. His representative emoji — a baby giraffe — reflects both his favorite animal and the gentle, slightly gawky charm his fandom, 42 (SAI), loves about him.
