Who Is JAY of iKON?

JAY, born Kim Jin-hwan on February 7, 1994, is a South Korean singer, dancer, and the leader of the boy group iKON. Signed to 143 Entertainment, JAY is known as the group’s main vocalist and lead dancer, as well as one of its most experienced members.

Early Life and Trainee Days

Born in Ora-dong on Jeju Island, JAY – then known by his real name Jinhwan – joined YG Entertainment as a trainee and appeared on the 2013 survival show “WIN: Who Is Next” as a member of Team B. He went on to serve as one of three team leaders on “Mix & Match,” the show that finalized iKON’s lineup.

Debut and Leadership

JAY debuted with iKON on September 15, 2015, as the group’s main vocalist and lead dancer. Following the departure of original leader B.I in June 2019, JAY was appointed as iKON’s new leader, a role he has held through the group’s continued promotions and its 2023 move from YG Entertainment to 143 Entertainment.

Solo Career

JAY made his solo debut in 2023 with the single album “Paradise,” followed shortly after by the EP “Blue Moon.” After completing his mandatory military service as a social service agent between July 2023 and April 2025, he returned with his first full-length solo album, “207,” released on July 31, 2025, featuring the double title tracks “We Can’t Explain” and “Obey.”

Personal Life

JAY is fluent in Japanese and is considered the group’s strongest Japanese speaker, often taking a lead role in iKON’s Japan promotions. He enjoys playing guitar, swimming, and reading, and has said books are his best friend. Fans have given him the playful nicknames “13cm Fairy” and “Fake Maknae,” referencing his height and youthful appearance despite being the oldest member of the group.

As both iKON’s leader and a rising soloist, JAY continues to be recognized by iKONICs for guiding the group through major transitions while building a distinct solo identity of his own.
