Who Is Somyi?

Somyi (솜이), born Ahn Som Yi (안솜이) on January 26, 2000, is a South Korean singer, dancer, and producer best known as the former lead vocalist, lead dancer, rapper, and maknae of the girl group DIA. Let’s walk through her story together, from her debut with DIA to her return as a solo artist.

Early Life and Joining DIA

Somyi was born in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, and grew up in Wonju, Gangwon Province, where she attended Wonju Girls’ Middle School and Wonju High School before majoring in Practical Music at the Seoul School of Performing Arts (SOPA). On April 5, 2017, she and fellow trainee Jueun were announced as new members of DIA, and she officially debuted on April 19 with the group’s second studio album, YOLO.

Life as a DIA Member

As a member of DIA, Somyi took part in several releases including Love Generation, Present, Summer Ade, and Newtro. She was also part of the group’s sub-unit BCHCS. In 2017, she appeared on KBS’s idol rebooting survival show The Unit alongside fellow member Yebin, finishing in 12th place. DIA earned its first music show win during the Summer Ade promotions in 2018, a milestone Somyi was part of.

Departure and Hiatus

In May 2020, Somyi did not take part in DIA’s Flower 4 Seasons comeback promotions. In January 2022, her agency at the time, PocketDol Studio, confirmed that she had terminated her exclusive contract and left the group, citing health reasons. She subsequently stepped away from public entertainment activities for an extended period.

Return as a Solo Artist

In 2025, Somyi returned to the spotlight, signing with new agency Moden Berry Korea under Air Global Castle. The agency announced that she would be preparing her solo debut, marking her first solo musical activity in roughly eight years since joining DIA. Alongside her return to performing, Somyi has also stepped into a producing and creative-directing role, contributing to the development of new projects at her label.
