Story

Biography

Kwon Soon-young — known worldwide as Hoshi — was born on June 15, 1996, in Namyangju-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. He grew up with an older sister and attended Maseok High School before later studying at Dong-A University of Broadcasting Arts and Hanyang University’s Institute for Future Talents.

Before becoming an idol, Hoshi trained in Taekwondo and earned a black belt, even competing as a Taekwondo champion in his youth — a background that partly explains his athleticism as a dancer. He joined Pledis Entertainment in late 2011/2012 and trained for roughly four years, appearing in the online reality show “Seventeen TV” from 2013–2014, which introduced fans to the trainees who would eventually form SEVENTEEN.

He debuted as a member of SEVENTEEN with the extended play 17 Carat on May 29, 2015. As Performance Team Leader, Hoshi choreographs most of the group’s routines and is widely credited as one of the driving creative forces behind SEVENTEEN’s stage identity.

His subunit journey has been extensive: alongside Seungkwan and DK he formed BSS (BooSeokSoon), releasing their debut single “Just Do It” on March 21, 2018. He made his solo debut with the song “Spider” on April 2, 2021, taking part in writing, producing and performing the entire project. In 2023, Hoshi and bandmate Joshua appeared in TVING’s reality show Bro and Marble alongside several Korean entertainers. In February 2025, Pledis Entertainment announced Hoshi would debut in a new subunit with Woozi, called Hoshi X Woozi, releasing the single album Beam on March 10, 2025. On his 29th birthday that year, he released the self-composed track “I Want You Back.” In March 2026, Hoshi released the track “Baby, Honey.”

Beyond music, Hoshi has become a sought-after fashion and brand ambassador. He was named Japan ambassador for skincare brand d’Alba in July 2023 before being promoted to Asia Global Ambassador in 2024, became the first brand ambassador for kimchi brand Jongga in October 2023, and became a NARS Korea ambassador alongside S.Coups in August 2024. He has also modeled for luxury fashion houses including AMI Paris and Diesel.

As of the current SEVENTEEN promotional cycle, Hoshi entered military service in September 2025, with an expected return around March 2027, following South Korea’s mandatory enlistment requirements for male citizens.
