Who Is Nayoung?

Nayoung, born Kim Na-young on November 23, 1995, is a South Korean singer-turned-actress best remembered as the sweet-voiced lead vocalist of Gugudan. Long before she stepped into theater spotlights, Nayoung first caught the public’s eye on the survival show Produce 101, where she finished 14th and narrowly missed a spot in the project group I.O.I. That near-miss turned into a bigger opportunity just months later.

From Produce 101 to Gugudan’s Debut

In June 2016, Jellyfish Entertainment introduced Nayoung as part of its very first girl group, Gugudan. She debuted alongside seven other members with the mini album “Act.1 The Little Mermaid,” instantly standing out for her warm, clear tone and easy stage charisma. Fans nicknamed her “Shining Nayoung,” a name that stuck because of her upbeat energy and trademark dimpled smile.

Sub-Units, Variety Shows, and a Growing Fanbase

Nayoung didn’t just stay in her lane as a group vocalist. She joined the temporary project team Sunny Girls, appeared as a cameo across several dramas, and later formed Gugudan SeMiNa with members Sejeong and Mina — a soulful subunit named after the trio’s initials. Along the way, she built a close, lasting friendship with Sejeong, one that fans still love seeing on variety shows like “Battle Trip.”

Life After Gugudan: A New Chapter in Acting

When Gugudan officially disbanded at the end of 2020 after an extended hiatus, Nayoung didn’t step away from the spotlight — she simply found a new stage. She threw herself into musical theater, debuting in “Mephisto” in 2019 and later taking on emotionally rich roles in productions like “Gwangju,” a musical honoring the 1980 pro-democracy uprising, and a Korean adaptation of Chekhov’s “The Seagull.”

In 2022, she signed with GoodMan Story Entertainment and made the decision to promote under her real name, Kim Na-young, signaling her full transition from idol to actress. Since then, she’s taken on stage plays, short-form web dramas, and continues to grow her range as a performer.
