Who Is Youngbin?

Youngbin, born Kim Young-bin on November 23, 1993, is the leader of SF9, the South Korean boy group under FNC Entertainment. Known for his steady leadership, dependable rap and dance skills, and his role as the group’s protective “dad,” Youngbin has guided SF9 through nearly a decade of comebacks, tours, and lineup changes.

Early Life and Trainee Days

Youngbin grew up in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, as the youngest of three siblings, with an older brother and sister who both helped shape his down-to-earth personality. Before joining FNC Entertainment, he trained at the well-known 1MILLION dance studio, which explains why he’s often singled out as one of SF9’s most technically solid dancers even though his official position also covers rap and leadership duties.

Debut and Career With SF9

Youngbin debuted as SF9’s leader on October 5, 2016, with the single album “Feeling Sensation,” and has fronted the group through releases such as “RPM,” “Rumination,” “The Wave of9,” and “Love Race.” As leader, he’s typically the one speaking on behalf of the members at showcases, award shows, and international promotions, including SF9’s Middle East and North American tour stops. Youngbin enlisted for mandatory military service on March 29, 2022 and was discharged on September 28, 2023, returning shortly after fellow member Inseong to help guide the group’s next chapter, including its participation in “The Piece of9,” “Sequence,” and later releases.

Personality and Everyday Life

Members often describe Youngbin as the “dad” of SF9: caring, a little strict when needed, and always looking out for the youngest member, Chani. He loves spicy food, Korean chess, reading, and basketball, and he’s known to be a heavy sleeper who is genuinely difficult to wake up on tour days. He also has two tattoos with personal meaning, one reading “Shine Forever” and another featuring the Latin phrase “sic parvis magna,” reflecting his belief in perseverance.

Youngbin has a pet dog named Jamong, and members have joked on variety shows that he’s one of the most affectionate members, often initiating hugs and skinship, especially with the group’s maknae.
