Who Is Chaeryeong?
Chaeryeong, born Lee Chae-ryeong on June 5, 2001, in Yongin, South Korea, is the main dancer, sub-vocalist, and sub-rapper of the JYP Entertainment girl group ITZY. Known for her precise, expressive choreography and calm, grounded personality, Chaeryeong has become one of the most respected performers in her generation of K-pop idols.
Early Life and Trainee Days
Chaeryeong grew up in a musical, performance-loving family alongside her older sister Chaeyeon, a former member of IZ*ONE, and her younger sister Chaemin. The two older sisters first stepped into the spotlight together in 2013 on the survival show “K-pop Star 3,” and later both trained under JYP Entertainment. In 2015, Chaeryeong appeared on JYP’s “SIXTEEN,” the reality competition that formed TWICE, finishing 12th. Even though she didn’t make that particular lineup, her five years of training paid off in a different way.
Debut With ITZY
On January 12, 2019, JYP Entertainment revealed Chaeryeong as one of the five members of its brand-new girl group, ITZY. She officially debuted on February 12, 2019, with the single album “IT’z Different” and its lead track “Dalla Dalla,” a song that announced ITZY’s confident, self-assured “teen crush” concept to the world.
Career Highlights
Since debut, Chaeryeong has promoted through ITZY’s full run of releases, from “IT’z Icy” and “Not Shy” to the group’s first studio album, “Crazy in Love,” and later chart-topping EPs like “Checkmate,” “Cheshire,” and “Kill My Doubt.” In August 2021, Studio Choom named her Artist of the Month in recognition of her dance skills, and she took part in the group’s world tours in support of these releases. She’s also stepped outside music occasionally, including a guest appearance in the drama “My Alcohol Diary” in 2022.
