Chaeyoung (TWICE): The Artist-Rapper Who Designed Her Own Legacy

Chaeyoung, born Son Chae-young on April 23, 1999, is the main rapper and sub-vocalist of TWICE, the JYP Entertainment girl group known worldwide for its color-pop sound. What sets Chaeyoung apart among K-pop idols isn’t only her rapping — it’s her identity as a genuine visual artist, painter, and lyricist whose creative fingerprints are stamped all over TWICE’s brand, right down to the group’s official logo, which she designed herself.

An Artist Long Before an Idol

Chaeyoung showed a love of drawing from the moment she introduced herself on the survival show SIXTEEN, and fans quickly nicknamed her “Chaengcasso.” She paints, sketches, takes photography seriously, and writes much of her own material, and TWICE debuted on October 20, 2015, with the mini album The Story Begins, giving her a platform to fold that artistic sensibility directly into the group’s visual identity.

From Main Rapper to Solo Artist

As TWICE’s main rapper, Chaeyoung has delivered standout verses across nearly every era, from “Cheer Up” to “Feel Special” and beyond. On September 12, 2025, she released her long-awaited solo debut EP, LIL FANTASY vol. 1, an indie- and dream-pop-leaning project she helped write, compose, and arrange — becoming the fourth TWICE member to launch a solo career, following Nayeon, Jihyo, and Tzuyu.

Beyond the Stage

Chaeyoung carries a sketchbook wherever she goes, has around a dozen small tattoos that reflect her love of personal expression, and even narrated an official “Art Zoom” video for Google Arts & Culture in 2020. In late 2025, she announced a temporary hiatus after being diagnosed with vasovagal syncope, prioritizing her health while continuing to write and create. Whether painting, rapping, or designing merchandise, Chaeyoung proves that TWICE’s success runs on more than catchy hooks — it runs on real artistry.
