Biography & History

BABYMONSTER is a seven-member South Korean girl group formed and managed by YG Entertainment, introduced as the label’s first new girl group since BLACKPINK’s 2016 debut. The group first appeared publicly with the six-member digital single “Batter Up” on November 27, 2023, with member Ahyeon absent due to health reasons, before completing their lineup and formally debuting on April 1, 2024, with the mini album Babymons7er and its title track “Sheesh.” The group’s multinational roster – Ruka, Pharita, Asa, Ahyeon, Rami, Rora, and Chiquita – spans South Korea, Japan, and Thailand.

BABYMONSTER’s identity was built around a duality baked into their name: an offstage “baby” charm balanced against a performance style defined by intensity, precision, and hip-hop attitude. Positioned as heirs to YG’s earlier girl-group blueprints 2NE1 and BLACKPINK, the members are frequently described as “all-rounders” – trained to sing, rap, and dance at a high level rather than specializing narrowly, with an emphasis on strong live vocals over the more auto-tune-reliant style of some contemporaries.

The group’s debut mini album Babymons7er and full-length follow-up Drip (2024) – whose title track was co-written by BIGBANG’s G-Dragon – combined pushed BABYMONSTER’s cumulative album sales past 1.53 million copies within their first eight months, with both releases earning Platinum certification from the Korea Music Content Association. Drip charted on the Billboard 200, and the group’s fast-growing international fan base propelled a first world tour in 2025 (Hello Monsters) and a second beginning in 2026 in support of their third mini album, Choom.

BABYMONSTER expanded into Japan in 2025 with their original single “Ghost,” used as a theme song for the Japanese film Mieruko-chan, and has picked up major brand partnerships including Google Pixel, PUBG Mobile, and fashion labels such as APEE and Banila Co. Known to their fandom as MONSTIEZ, BABYMONSTER has quickly become one of the most closely watched rookie-tier acts in K-pop, carrying the weight of expectation as YG Entertainment’s next flagship girl group.

“We want people to see both sides of us -- the baby charm and the monster on stage.”

The group's members were revealed gradually starting January 12, 2023, in the order Rami, Ahyeon, Chiquita, Asa, Rora, Pharita, and Ruka.
Their name was trademarked by YG as early as December 2019, years before the group's eventual debut.
"BabyMonster" was reportedly one of the original name candidates considered for BLACKPINK before that group's debut.
The group first appeared publicly as a six-member act on November 27, 2023, with member Ahyeon absent due to a temporary health-related hiatus.
Ahyeon returned to the group in early 2024, and BABYMONSTER completed their seven-member lineup for their April 2024 official debut.
Ruka is a former member of the Japanese girl group Shibu3 Project and has trained the longest of any BABYMONSTER member.
Pharita was chosen from a pool of 1,226 applicants and was previously a contestant on the survival show Idol Paradise.
Rora previously performed in the children's music group U.SSO Girl alongside NewJeans' Hyein, using the stage name U.ha.
Chiquita has the shortest training period of any member, joining YG in March 2021 and training for just under two years before debut.
Asa is credited as one of the lyricists and composers on BABYMONSTER's debut single "Batter Up."
The group's debut single, the pre-release track "Dream," topped the Billboard Hot Trending Songs chart upon its May 2023 release.
Their fandom name, MONSTIEZ, combines "MONS" from BABYMONSTER with "ties," symbolizing the close bond between the group and fans.
The group's studio album Drip features a title track co-written by BIGBANG's G-Dragon.
BABYMONSTER surpassed 1.53 million cumulative album sales within just the first eight months of their career.
Both Babymons7er and Drip earned Platinum certification from the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA).
Member Rami went on a temporary hiatus in May 2025 due to health concerns, a similar circumstance to Ahyeon's pre-debut absence.
BABYMONSTER's first original Japanese single, "Ghost," served as the theme song for the Japanese horror film Mieruko-chan.
The group has partnered with Google Pixel, hosting a fan experience event at Tsutaya in Shibuya, Tokyo, in April 2025.
BABYMONSTER also became the face of a PUBG Mobile collaboration campaign in March 2025.
Their debut Japan-adjacent promotional cycle saw them added a bonus date to their Hong Kong concert due to overwhelming demand.
The group's dorm arrangement has shifted over time, with members regularly rotating roommate pairings.
BABYMONSTER's pre-debut evaluation show, Last Evaluation, initially proposed a five-member lineup before public demand led to all seven being included.
Chiquita is the sister of Copper Dechawat, a member of the Thai boy group BUS.
Rami began working as a child model at age two, years before her 2018 YG audition.
BABYMONSTER's second mini album, We Go Up, arrived in October 2025 following the "Hot Sauce" single earlier that summer.
The group's third mini album, Choom (meaning "dance" in Korean), was released May 4, 2026, alongside the single "Sugar Honey Ice Tea."
The Choom World Tour, launched in Seoul in June 2026, expanded to South America, Europe, and Oceania.
Several members are trilingual or beyond: Ahyeon speaks Korean, English, and Chinese, while Asa is fluent in Japanese and Korean.
BABYMONSTER's early promotional strategy emphasized live vocal and rap skill demonstrations over mystery-driven teasers, a departure from many rookie group rollouts.
The group's Korean, Japanese, and Thai members give BABYMONSTER a built-in multinational marketing angle across East and Southeast Asia.
