Tzuyu (TWICE): Taiwan’s Global Star and TWICE’s Graceful Visual

Tzuyu, born Chou Tzu-yu on June 14, 1999, in Tainan, Taiwan, is the maknae, lead dancer, sub-vocalist, and visual of TWICE, the nine-member K-pop act formed by JYP Entertainment. As the group’s youngest member and its sole Taiwanese member, Tzuyu has grown from a shy trainee into one of the most recognized faces in the Korean entertainment industry, admired equally for her elegant dancing and her calm, composed presence.

From Tainan to Seoul

Tzuyu began dancing at a young age and trained at a local academy before JYP Entertainment scouts discovered her in 2012. She relocated to South Korea as a young teenager, attending Hanlim Multi Art School and eventually graduating alongside bandmate Chaeyoung in February 2019. TWICE debuted on October 20, 2015, with the mini album The Story Begins, and Tzuyu’s poised visuals and precise dancing quickly made her a standout member of the group’s “maknae line” alongside Dahyun and Chaeyoung.

A Career Defined by Grace and Growth

As TWICE’s lead dancer, Tzuyu anchors choreography across the group’s biggest hits, and her natural athleticism became a viral talking point after her archery performances on Idol Star Athletics Championships led some international fans to mistake her for an Olympian. On September 6, 2024, she released her solo debut EP, abouTZU, led by the single “Run Away,” presenting a more mature, disco-inspired side of her artistry.

Beyond the Stage

Tzuyu completed a master’s degree in applied psychology in 2024, donated 50 million won to South Korea’s Community Chest during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has become one of the most-followed Taiwanese celebrities on Instagram. As TWICE continues to tour the world, Tzuyu remains a defining symbol of the group’s international reach, and of Taiwan’s growing presence on the global pop stage.
