Since the mid-2010s, Korean agencies have leaned into international scouting as a way to expand into idols’ home markets. Southeast Asia in particular has become a key talent pipeline for the idol industry, alongside the long-established markets of Japan and China. That’s a big part of why so many modern kpop groups now feature multinational lineups instead of all-Korean ones.

Japanese Kpop Idols

Japan is one of the largest and longest-standing sources of non-Korean idols in kpop, thanks to its massive music market and close cultural ties with Korea.

  • Sana, Momo, and Mina (TWICE) – this trio helped the group win over Japanese audiences and are widely credited as part of the reason Twice built such a strong reputation there.
  • Yuta (NCT) – one of SM Entertainment’s most prominent Japanese male idols.
  • Rei (IVE) and Sakura (LE SSERAFIM) – two standout Japanese idols of the current generation; Sakura was already a well-known idol in Japan before debuting in kpop.
  • Ni-ki (ENHYPEN) and Yuto (PENTAGON) are also active Japanese male idols.

Chinese Kpop Idols

China is one of kpop’s biggest sources of non-Korean talent, especially through SM Entertainment’s NCT/WayV project.

  • Kun, Xiaojun, and Hendery (WayV/NCT) – Kun and Xiaojun are from mainland China, while Hendery is from Macau.
  • Chenle and Renjun (NCT Dream) – both were child singers in China before joining NCT.
  • Ningning (aespa) – the group’s youngest member, scouted by SM after they saw her on a Chinese TV show.
  • Yiren (EVERGLOW) – from Hangzhou, and a former Produce 48 contestant.
  • Jun and The8 (SEVENTEEN) – Pledis Entertainment’s two Chinese members.
  • Yan An (PENTAGON) – nicknamed the “Shanghai Prince” by fans.

Taiwanese Kpop Idols

Taiwan has produced a notable number of idols, several of whom hold central positions in their groups.

  • Tzuyu (TWICE) – the first Taiwanese idol to ever debut in kpop, now the group’s visual and maknae.
  • Shuhua ((G)I-DLE) – the group’s visual and maknae.
  • Mark (GOT7) – a Taiwanese-American idol under JYP Entertainment.
  • YangYang (WayV/NCT) – born in Taiwan, and WayV’s main rapper.

Thai Kpop Idols

Thailand is widely regarded as Southeast Asia’s most successful idol-exporting country.

  • Lisa (BLACKPINK) – Thailand’s most famous idol export; Guinness World Records recognized her as the most-followed kpop artist on Instagram, with over 105 million followers, and she also became the first kpop artist to perform at the Academy Awards.
  • Bambam (GOT7) and Ten (WayV/NCT) – two long-established Thai male idols.
  • Pharita and Chiquita (BABYMONSTER) – YG Entertainment’s newer generation of Thai idols, often seen as following in Lisa’s footsteps.

Vietnamese Kpop Idols

Idols of Vietnamese descent are still relatively rare, but their numbers have grown noticeably in the fourth generation of kpop.

  • Hanni (NewJeans) – currently the most prominent idol of Vietnamese descent, born in Australia with dual heritage.
  • Hanbin (TEMPEST) – from Yên Bái, one of the first male idols of Vietnamese descent to officially debut in kpop.
  • Nien (tripleS) – of both Vietnamese and Taiwanese descent, and a former contestant on the survival show Girls Planet 999.

Egyptian Kpop Idols – A Rare Case

Egypt is a striking example of just how far kpop’s reach extends – into the Middle East and Africa – even though idols of Egyptian origin remain extremely rare.

  • Nada – an Egyptian singer and dancer who was a member of the project girl group UHSN under Stone Music Entertainment, debuting in 2019.

Kpop’s connection to Egypt runs both ways: the Korean group New And.B (formerly known as B.I.G) built a following by covering the Egyptian hit song “3 Daqat” in Arabic, before eventually holding their first concert in Cairo.

Other Rising Countries

Beyond the more familiar names, kpop agencies have recently expanded scouting to several other Southeast Asian countries:

  • Indonesia – Dita (Secret Number), Kim (VVUP), and Via (Beauty Box). Indonesia now ranks third worldwide in Korean music consumption, behind only Japan and Taiwan.
  • Philippines – Elisia and Gehlee (UNIS), two Filipino idols who debuted in 2024.
  • US and Australia – a growing number of mixed-heritage or Asian-American/Australian idols are also appearing in modern kpop lineups.
